Bespoke Staircase Stringers Define Your Staircase Profile
Define Your Staircase Profile With a Bespoke Stringer
When designing your staircase either with the Pear Stairs design team or the online Staircreator tool, it is important to know what a staircase stringer is. A stair stringer (also called ‘string’ or ‘stringer board’) is the housing on either side of a flight of stairs, into which the treads and risers are fixed. A staircase will have two stringers, one on either side of the steps
The two main types of stringer are referred to as cut and closed. If the stringer houses or hides the edge of the stairs from view it is a closed string. If the string has been cut to the shape of the staircase, showing the tread profile, then it is a cut stringer. There are also wall stringers that connect treads to the wall when the staircase sits flush to it.
Cut or Closed? Which Staircase Stringer is for You?
Pear Stairs can supply staircase stringers in a variety of different styles and materials. Pre-made stringers are available or custom stringers can be manufactured to your specifications. Pre-made standard stringer boards are available up to 32mm thickness and 244mm height. These are available in 2.4, 3.6 and 4.2m lengths direct from the online shop. Stair stringers with a minimum width of 32mm are recommended as anything less can result in squeaky treads.
Cut stringers on the other hand are cut to the shape of your stairs to display the side profile of each step. These cut stringers are supplied in lengths of 1m for 3 steps, or 1.6m for 5 steps, manufactured to 48mm thickness and 260mm height, and are produced to a 35° pitch (the angle of the stairs from top to bottom). Pre-made interior cut stringers are not available to order, instead they are manufactured bespoke to each order. Thanks to the expertise of Pear Stairs’ experienced staff, curved stringers can be manufactured for use with custom curved staircase designs. They are also available with decorative brackets, though these are only available with custom orders and are not available as pre-made products.
